The Client:

Creating clear roles and one team culture

The situation:

After significant change, the business unit resulted in a team with a mixture of tenure. With the team geographically dispersed and work divided across the sections, the team was in the ‘storming’ phase of team development, facing challenges such as unclear roles and responsibilities and a heterogeneous culture. In addition, the team was working through a year’s backlog of work, with sections performing differently to manage the workload.

The approach:

The client engaged Grosvenor to assist the team in moving them towards a ‘norming’ phase, where roles are clearly defined and understood, and they could operate as a cohesive and functional team. Grosvenor facilitated tailor-designed workshops; one focused on aligning roles and responsibilities, particularly differences across regions. The second workshop focused on building a ‘one team’ culture team.  This meant working through elements not working well in the team (conscious actions as well as under-the-surface norms) towards an aligned team with shared understanding and expectations. Ice breakers and exercises were designed to build the team, help them let go of the past and understand each other better.

How it went:

The team participated in two full-day workshops across different locations, having frank and fearless conversations in a safe environment with their section counterparts and unit Head. The complex facilitation resulted in the beginning of conversations based on the building blocks identified within the workshops. The project concluded with workshop outputs captured.

“[The facilitator] was very impressive and understood the nuances of the underlying issues very quickly. She managed to figure out the real issues without actually being specifically told.  This absolutely amazed me a couple of times.”
